Servus Munchen

Stijn Zanders, Oktoberfest Activity Week, Munich, 21-26 September

Servus! I have always wanted to go to the Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest beer festival, and this year I had the chance to go with ESTIEM. The Bavarian festival has been held since 1810 and yearly more than 6 million people are consuming 7.7 million litres of beer and 500.000 roasted chickens.

Besides going to the Oktoberfest twice, Local Group Munich packed the week with exciting activities. Tuesday we had a city tour through Munich where we saw the famous Rathaus-Glockenspiel. On Wednesday we went to the Erdinger wheat beer brewery (largest in the world) to cure our hangover, where we had Weißwurst breakfast and many beers. After which we hiked to a hut in the Alps, followed by a party in the hut till late in the night. On the one but last day we took it easy, since the last day we would go to the Oktoberfest the whole day.

That day we stood up at 6 AM to wait in line for two hours at the tent, finally at 10 AM the first beer was flowing! Oktoberfest offers a great atmosphere, with traditional music (comparable to Carnaval music), big and strong beers and delicious roasted chicken.

All in all, the Oktoberfest together with ESTIEM was an once-in-a-lifetime where I have met many new awesome friends. Luckily my trip was not over yet, since I travelled to Budapest the 29th of September for the PR-CR School.
