FAQ

1. What can I do when I’m an Interactie member?
Interactie organises a lot of events in Eindhoven like trainings, case competitions, barbecues and member drinks. Interactie also organizes 2 exchanges abroad each year and a members trip. You can become active by doing a committee with other people, which is a lot of fun and good for your personal development. As an Interactie member, you’re also automatically member of ESTIEM. If you want to become a member, send us an e-mail or visit the Interactie office and sign up as an Interactie member through filling in a form. Please ask the boardies for this. Becoming a member of Interactie costs only €12 per year.

2. What can I do within ESTIEM?
ESTIEM has different kinds of events throughout the whole year. You can “apply” for these events on www.estiem.org, if you’re a member. Of course, you can also try to go on a trip with someone you know and apply together. These events are all over Europe and a lot of fun. All these events have certain themes. For example, an Europe3D event is an event where people get to know the political, economical and cultural aspects of the country they’re visiting. Be careful you won’t get addicted on travelling after your first trip!

You can also get active in one of the Projects, Committees or Initiatives within ESTIEM. If you want to work in a multinational team and get active on a higher level, go to the “Get Involved” page.

3. How can I sign up for an ESTIEM event?
After signing up for Interactie, you will receive an e-mail through which you can access the ESTIEM portal and start applying for ESTIEM events. The board is always available to help you with this. All events in Europe are organised by people that we know, so you don’t have to worry about being fooled or ending up abroad without help!

4. What are the costs of an ESTIEM event?
Travelling with ESTIEM is really cheap. The participation fee for approximately 5 days of food, accommodation and activities is often around 50-70 euros. This doesn’t cover transportation, and extra costs you make there, like having a drink. Another pro is that Interactie has a reimbursement policy for these participation fees (ask for general conditions). This means that your participation fee can be reimbursed and you only have to pay for your transportation.

5. I have a question about Interactie, ESTIEM or need tips for travelling. What should I do?
If you’re uncertain about something, you can always send an e-mail to the board or stop by at U2 in the “Paviljoen”. We’re always up for answering your questions.

6. Where can I find cheap tickets?
You can use the website www.goeuro.nl to find all the cheap flight, train and bus tickets available to any place in Europe! Other sites to find cheap travel options are: www.lowcostairlines.nl, www.skyscanner.com or www.cheaptickets.nl. From Eindhoven, low cost airlines like Wizzair, Ryanair and Transavia are departing to all kinds of destinations. From Schiphol, there are also some low-cost airlines, like SAS, Norwegian Air and Easyjet. If you go to an event in Germany or Belgium, you can also consider other ways of transportation like the car or train. On the ESTIEM website there is a lot of information per destination about how to get there.

7. I lost my password for the ESTIEM portal.
When you go to www.estiem.org, please click on the green frame next to the login box (without typing in anything), you will get an extra screen where you can retrieve your password. The user name is always your name as it is written in a normal way, e.g. “Bas de Rijk”.

8. How does the Portal work?
On the following page you can find a small manual that guides you through the Portal.

9. What is the difference between Interactie and ESTIEM?
Interactie is the (Dutch) study association for international activities for Industrial Engineering and Management in Eindhoven. We have our office in the Paviljoen and belong to the association Industria. ESTIEM is a Europe-wide organization with a wide network that Interactie uses to travel through Europe and meet up with other students. ESTIEM has its own yearly board, which consist of six European students from all over Europe. When Interactie organizes an event, it is specifically done to attract ESTIEMers from other European cities.

ESTIEM

ESTIEM, European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management, represents more than 60.000 students from all over Europe. It is made up of a network of 79 member associations, called Local Groups, in 31 different countries. Founded in 1990, its goal is to build up and strengthen the relationships between IEM students in Europe. Until this date, it is the only Europe-wide organisation for IEM students.

All year round, multinational project teams are organising European activities such as student exchanges, case competitions, lectures, trainings and workshops. This makes ESTIEM a unique network that brings together people with different cultural backgrounds and experiences. Do you want to stay updated about all the developments, open positions and open calls within ESTIEM? You can always stop by at Paviljoen U.2 or send us an e-mail to interactie@tue.nl.

If you become member of Interactie, you’ll also become a member of ESTIEM. This means you can apply for ESTIEM events on the Portal. The site of ESTIEM is www.estiem.org. Take a look and see what opportunities there are for you. Depending on what event you’re going, you will have a week full of lectures on a specific topic, trainings on personal skills, fun activities like city tours and ofcourse awesome parties. On these events, people from all around Europe are gathered with the same goal and are eager to meet you. If you have any questions, you can always send an e-mail to interactie@tue.nl.

ESTIEM Portal

ESTIEM Portal Introduction

Once you’re a member of Interactie, you’re also an ESTIEMer. This means you can join all the events that are organised within ESTIEM. The 76 “Local Groups” from all over Europe can organise events with different themes. There are events that show you the cultural, political and economical dimensions of a country(Europe3D), conferences and events that focus on a relevant topic in the Industrial Engineering field or Activity Weeks with certain themes. You can find all the offered events and more on the ESTIEM website, the so-called Portal. On this page you find a small manual to find you way on the Portal.

When you come on the Portal, you can immediately log in. Your user name is your full name and you can fill in your password through the mail you received once you’re registered in ESTIEM.

Portal-1-493x319

When you’re logged in, you see the following screen. In the left green block you see three events with the nearest application deadline. In the green block on the right you see the forum topics that are most current. You also see the tabs: Home, Events, Get involved, Forum, Photos and My Profile. Sometimes it is quite hard to find something within the ESTIEM site, because the structure is not always that convenient.

Portal2

If it is your first time on the Portal, it is recommendable to update your profile. When you click “My Profile”, you see the following screen(with your own account of course). It is quite self-evident how to adjust all your data and how to upload a phote. It is really recommended to upload a picture, because it looks nice and it increases your chances to be accepted for events. When someone looks on your profile, he sees all the events you’ve ever visited and the details you have filled in.

Portal3-493x344

Applying for an ESTIEM evenement

Now you have updated your profile, you can apply for an event. When you click on the tab “Events”, you can see all the events that are available. In green letters you see the type of event, the theme/topic, and the location. In the black letters you see the date of the events and whether you can still apply fo the event. The first events have often already passed the application deadline. On the right you could use filters to find specific events and all the way down on the page you could navigate to the next page.

Portal4-493x352

When you’re interested in an event, you can click on the block to get more information. You’ll see you can’t click on every block, because you can’t apply for events like Local Group Exchanges. When you for example click on “ Ice Hockey World Championship Activity week” in Minsk, you see the following.

In the green block you see the location, dates, the application period(application deadline of the example is March 28 for example, the participation fee(that can be declared at Interactie), the amount of persons that will be accepted for the events and the cancellation deadline, the last date that you can cancel an event once you’re registered without possible financial consequences.

Portal5

When you click “Apply for event”, you have to write a short motivation of 500 characters. Write this motivation with some enthusiasm, to convince the organisers you are really motivated to attend the event. Once you’ve applied, you get a confirmation mail from ESTIEM. From that moment on, you have to wait until the organisers accept you for the event. This can take a while after the application period. You get an e-mail if you’re accepted. Once you’re accepted and registered for an event, you can still cancel. Do this before the cancellation deadline. You can also click on “Show Participants”, to see who else has applied and is accepted.

Further possibilities

On the portable you can also see the possibilities what is happening within Central ESTIEM. Under the tab “Get involved”, you find the different projects and committees that you can join within ESTIEM. Also, if you want to stay updated about ESTIEM, you can join the active maillist.

About

Interactie is the study association for international activities in the Industrial Engineering and Management field (IEM for short). Interactie began as a committee (Interact.cie) of Industria on the 4th of April 1990. Interactie was founded in 1996 as a subsidiary of Industria with the goal to give students the opportunity to get in contact with the international aspects of IEM. The association has around 170 members, both Dutch and International (master) students.

One of the goals of Interactie is to let IE (Industrial Engineering) students experience how amazing it is to travel, meet with and learn from other European IE students. Traveling with Interactie can provide you opportunities such as developing your soft and hard skills and make connections all over Europe.

One of the low entry barrier events Interactie organises is an exchange every six months to different cities in Europe.

“This exchange impressed me with all of its warmth and niceness. It has been a great chance to meet French students, experience French culture and also to get to know the members of Interactie.” (Exchange Grenoble)

On these exchanges you get to know other Dutch IE students, but most importantly the culture of the other international IE students.

Besides the exchanges, Interactie also provides other travel opportunities within ESTIEM.

Travel story: Eindhoven visits Kiev

From the 8th until the 14th of July, the ESTIEM Local Group exchange ‘Eindhoven visits Kiev’ took place. This trip was hosted by awesome people of LG (Local Group) Kiev and boy, I grew to love those people. The night we arrived, two of the LG members were already waiting for us at the airport. They had arranged cheap taxies for us to travel the last few km’s to our hostel. This was the first moment we discovered how kind and hospitable the Ukrainian people are. We even got a CD with the driver’s personal mixtape, since he was also a part-time DJ. But Let me tell you about our amazing week!

Travel story: Business Booster, Lisbon

The event “How to Become an Entrepreneur” organised by LG Lisbon was my first ESTIEM event and I must say it was an amazing week! I chose this particular event because I was tired of the Dutch weather and wanted to go to the sun and also the timing was really good as it was during a holiday.

“Ready for take-off”

After a hard year of work the 21st board was successfully discharged and the 22nd board has officially taken their seats. With an enthusiastic and driven look, we started our first month in U.2 (Pav.). There are several goals that we, as board as well as individuals, want to achieve during our board year. One of these goals is to let IE (Industrial Engineering) students experience… Read more »
